Port-Louis, 7th July 2010 — “Phishing” is a scam whereby fraudsters aim at obtaining personal details of Internet Banking customers of banks and other financial institutions, with the intention of carrying out thereafter fraudulent transactions on the customers’ accounts. These fraudsters operate by sending emails that appear to come from the customers’ own banks.
Some of our customers have received such fraudulent emails specifying that there has been a Transactional Error on their Account and asking them to login their Internet Banking get their account verified. MCB requests its IB Customers to disregard these bogus messages and not to respond to any instructions contained therein. Instead, IB Customers should forthwith delete the messages. IB customers who would have responded to such messages are advised to immediately change their password and to call MCB fidelis Services on 2026060 without delay.
MCB also recommends its IB Customers to ascertain the authenticity of the MCB IB website by clicking on the VeriSign seal, prior to logging in. If authentic, details of the VeriSign SSL Certificate will be displayed.
MCB customers and the general public are hereby reminded that access codes ( be they “user IDs” or “passwords” for Internet Banking or ”PIN Codes” for Credit and Debit cards, for example) are strictly personal and must not be revealed to third parties or used otherwise than in the appropriate authenticated environment. MCB also reminds its customers that good practice calls for the regular change of passwords and PIN Codes.
